Emily's Summer Journal, Week 4

July 13
Dear Diary,

We went to Grandma Louis's house this week.  Katie and Billy came on Thursday.  It was very fun but a little lonely.  Normally, when I'm at Grandma Louis's house. all the cousins are there and it's fun and noisy and busy.  My cousins Katie, Annie, Marguerite and Evie have a clubhouse in the backyard.  Katie and I tried to make a table for the clubhouse.  Grandma had a BIG plank of wood and we put four logs in the ground, but when we tried to put the plank of wood on top, one of them was too wobbly so they all fell over.  But Grandma Louis has a drill and nails, so Katie is going to drill the legs into the table with nails.

Boogie boarding at the water park
We also went to a water park and they had water slides.  You could do down the yellow one by yourself or you could go in a balloon on the blue ones.  It was pitch dark at first but then it got lighter and at the end you splashed into the pool.  I went backwards and it was scary because I couldn't see anything and I was going down, backwards, but it was awesome and really fun.

For school, I had to pick out a global issue, learn about it, and make a powerpoint to present to the class about it.  So here is a little of what I learned.  One of the causes of deforestation is overpopulation.  There are SO many people in the world, and they all need paper, pencils, books, toilet paper, notebooks, housing, buildings, furniture, and much more.  We get all these things from trees.

Another bit reason for cutting down trees is for the land.  A lot of this land is used for cattle farming.  There are 30,000 people in the UK.  One cow makes 50 burgers.  If every person in the UK ate 1 burger a week, we would need 1,500 cows to satisfy the United Kingdom for one week.  This may not be accurate, it it's a rough idea of how much cattle and land we need.  Once the land is no good anymore, farmers take their cattle and go somewhere else, leaving an empty nothingness where nothing and no one can live.  Something you can do is try to limit the amount of resources you use.  According to National Geographic, 27,000 trees worth of toilet paper are flushed down the toilet every day.  Another thing you can do is check out your books from the library or borrow them from a friend because books use a lot of paper, too.  When you're finished with a book, you can give it to a friend, donate it to a library or charity, or sell it at a yard sale instead of throwing it away.

You can also buy an acre of rainforest to save that area from being cut down.  You can contact your local environment group for details.

We went to Doodlehopper and I got a bunny eraser and a cupcake eraser for myself and a purple horse eraser for my friend in England who likes horses and a sleepover party mad libs book as a good-bye present for one of my Dutch friends, who's moving to Barcelona from England.  She likes to have sleepover parties.  I also got some purple, lavender, blue and white rubber bracelets for myself.

The new story, part 2

The robbery took place on a Wednesday in March, when Mary-Jane and Sarah were at school, their Mother at work in the family business, an ice cream parlour, which every child, mother, father and great-grandma in town could agree, was the best ice cream parlour ever in the history of the town.

Mary-Jane's father had a hard but well-paying job inventing computers.  The computers invented play a small but extremely important role in the robbery of the Coopers' house.  The father had just finished inventing a new type of computer, and he was exhausted.  He fell asleep.

A young man with green eyes and who knows what color hair (he was wearing a hat) snuck in, grabbed the laptop, and banged Mr. Cooper on the head!  He then put the laptop in his bag and looked around.  He collected a few more electronics, and headed upstairs.
